Short version: this site is educational information for the hospitality industry, not legal advice, and you should not act on it without advice from a qualified lawyer who knows your facts and your jurisdictions.
No legal advice; no attorney-client relationship#
The content of this site — issue briefs, state guides, calculators, checklists, glossary entries, case digests, and everything else — is general educational information. It is not legal advice, is not tailored to any particular property or employer, and may not reflect the law applicable to your situation. Using this site, including any interactive tool, creates no attorney-client, consultant, or advisory relationship with anyone.
Accuracy and currency#
Wage-and-hour law changes constantly — annually by formula, mid-year by ordinance, and overnight by court decision. We verify against primary sources and date every page, but no published resource can promise to be current at the moment you read it. Every rate, date, threshold, and holding on this site should be verified against the official source before you act on it. Where this site and a statute, regulation, agency publication, or court opinion differ, the official source controls — always.
Calculators and checklists#
The calculators implement the federal framework with simplified state parameters. They do not capture every structure (tiered tipped wages, multi-week averaging, CBA terms, every local ordinance, atypical workweeks) and their output is illustrative, not a payroll determination. The audit checklists are issue-spotting aids, not certifications of compliance: completing a checklist does not mean a property complies with anything.
Jurisdiction and conflicts#
Federal, state, and local law apply simultaneously, and the most protective applicable provision generally controls. Summaries here necessarily compress that layering. Collective bargaining agreements may alter many obligations described on this site — in both directions.
External links#
Links to government sites, court opinions, law-firm publications, and news coverage are provided for verification convenience. We don't control those sites and don't endorse or warrant their content; linked URLs change and rot.
No liability#
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the creators and publishers of this site disclaim all liability for any loss or claim arising from use of, or reliance on, anything published here. Your sole remedy for disagreement with any content is to stop using the site (though we'd rather you sent a correction — see about).
