Minimum wage#

The Alaska minimum wage is $13.00 per hour, effective July 1, 2025. 2024 Ballot Measure 1 amended AS 23.10.065: $13.00 on 7/1/2025, $14.00 on 7/1/2026, $15.00 on 7/1/2027; AK DOLWD states annual inflation adjustments resume beginning Jan. 1, 2028. Tipped employees & tip pooling#

Alaska does not allow a tip credit — tipped employees must receive the full minimum wage of $13.00 in direct cash wages before tips. Tips and gratuities may not be applied toward the minimum wage (AS 23.10.065(b)); tipped hotel staff must receive the full cash minimum, which steps to $14.00 on 7/1/2026.

Tip pooling#

No state tip-pooling statute; federal rules govern. Because Alaska allows no tip credit, employer-mandated pools may include non-tipped back-of-house employees, but owners, managers, and supervisors are always excluded. (29 U.S.C. §203(m)(2)(B); 29 C.F.R. §531.54)

See the federal baseline rules in our tip credit and tip pooling briefs — the stricter of federal or Alaska law controls.

Overtime#

Overtime is due after 40 hours in a workweek and after 8 hours in a workday. Time-and-a-half after 8 hours/day or 40 hours/week (AS 23.10.060). Statutory exemptions include employers with fewer than four employees (AS 23.10.060(d)(1)) and voluntary flexible work-hour plans (e.g., 10-hour/4-day) approved by AK DOLWD.

Meal & rest breaks#

Meal breaks: Not required by Alaska law for adult employees — No meal or rest break requirement for adults; minors 14-17 working 5+ consecutive hours must receive a 30-minute break (AS 23.10.350).. Federal law requires only that breaks under 20 minutes, if offered, be paid.

Rest breaks: Not required by Alaska law.

Scheduling & premium pay#

  • Reporting-time pay: None required by state law.
  • Split-shift premium: None.
  • Spread of hours: None.

Service charges & gratuities#

Alaska has no service-charge-specific statute — the federal tip/service-charge line (and IRS treatment) controls. Background: service charges, auto-gratuities & resort fees.

Pay administration#

  • Pay frequency: At least monthly or semimonthly, at the employee's election (AS 23.05.140).
  • Wage statements: Employers must furnish itemized pay information (rate, hours, deductions) each pay period under Alaska Wage and Hour Act regulations; exact formatting rules come from DOLWD guidance rather than a detailed pay-stub statute — flagged: cite-check before relying on a specific section.
  • Exempt salary floor: $1040.00/week (state) — AS 23.10.055(b) requires EAP-exempt employees to be paid at least 2x the state minimum wage for the first 40 hours each week: $1,040/week now; rises to $1,120/week ($58,240/yr) on 7/1/2026 with the $14.00 step.
  • Lodging credit: Reasonable-cost board/lodging deductions are permitted only with a written agreement and within DOLWD regulatory limits (8 AAC 15); common at remote lodges and seasonal resorts — document carefully.

Daily overtime after 8 hours is the key exposure for hotel and seasonal resort scheduling (no averaging across the week). Remote lodge room-and-board arrangements require written deduction agreements. Ballot Measure 1's paid sick leave (7/1/2025) covers hotel staff. No Alaska municipality has adopted a local minimum wage.
